The Phosphoria Formation is 1, feet thick in the Currie Hills area (Nelson, ), 1, feet in the southern Pequop Mountains (Snelson, ), feet in the Montello Canyon area of the Leach Mountains (T.M. Cheney in Coats, ), about 90 feet in the southern Leach Mountains (Martindale, ), and to feet in the Snake Mountains. Skip to Main Content.

Other major Permian formations in Idaho are the Phosphoria, Park City, Shedhorn and Wells. The Snaky Canyon, Oquirrh, Windy Ridge, Hunsaker Creek, Casto volcanics, upper Wood River and Park City Formations also contain Permian sections. The Phosphoria is by far the most fossiliferous of the Idaho Permian formations. Ranges from to ft thick in southeast ID and thins westward in ID. Upper and lower contacts defined as base and top of dark carbonaceous or phosphatic beds. Throughout southeast ID lowest bed contains abundant fish scales, bones, and nodules. Overlies Grandeur tongue of Park City formation; underlies Rex chert member of Phosphoria.

(Vincent Ellis), Phosphoria, Park City and Shedhorn formations in the western phosphate field. The Phosphoria Formation, named after Phosphoria Gulch near Georgetown, Idaho, was con- sidered to be coeval with the upper part of the Park City Formation, and therefore of Pennsylvanian age.

Bythe Phosphoria was provisionally assigned a Permian age (Richards and Mansfield, ) and the name Phosphoria Formation was applied to rocks in.

The Phosphoria Formation was deposited under marine conditions in a foreland basin located between the Paleozoic continental margin and the North American cratonic shelf. The upwelling of cold, nutrient-rich marine water at that time stimulated the growth of plankton and nekton, resulting in the accumulation of organic matter on the seacoupled with low rates of clastic and.
